What Is A Demon Slayer Mark?
The Demon Slayer Corps is made up of brave soldiers who fight demons. Demons are evil, human-eating, immortal creatures. They come out only at night, as the demons cannot stand the sun. The demon slayers train hard and put their lives at risk to save humans.
Tanjiro Kamado, the protagonist of the series, is a demon slayer. His family was slaughtered by the demon lord, Muzan Kibutsuji. Mujan is a thousand-year-old demon who has been plaguing humanity. Mujan is the only demon who can turn humans into demons.
He transforms Tanjiro’s sister, Nezuko, into a demon. Giyu Tomioka confronts Tanjiro and leads him to his master so that he can train to be a demon slayer. Tanjiro joined the demon-slayer corps to find a way to turn Nezuko back into a human and kill Muzan Kibutsuji.
The Demon Slayer Mark is like a tattoo that appears on a demon slayer when he survives life-threatening situations while fighting a demon.
The mark mostly appears on the face but can appear on any part of the body. The heartbeat of a demon slayer should reach up to two hundred beats per minute.
Also, the temperature of a slayer’s body should be more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Most people will die in such situations. Thus, many demon slayers are not able to awaken this mark. They perish before the mark awakens. It is rare and was lost for some time.
Tanjiro awakens his mark in the Entertainment District Arc while fighting Gyutaro. The mark is not permanent. But once awakened, it can reappear when facing a demon. With time, the mark gets deeper and grows bigger, spreading across the body.
History
Demon Slayer is set in the Taisho Period in Japan. The Taisho period covered the period between 1912 and 1926. The history of Demon Slayer Mark goes back five hundred years before the Taisho period, during the Sengoku period.
Yoriichi Tsugikuni is the strongest demon slayer that ever existed. Yoriichi is the younger twin brother of Michikatsu Tsugikuni. He was the progenitor of breathing styles. Yoriichi developed the sun breathing style of breathing. It is the most powerful style of sword breathing.
All the other styles of breathing have been derived from the sun breathing. Yoriichi is the first demon slayer to possess the demon slayer mark. However, unlike other demon slayers who awaken their mark after going through gruelling situations, Yoriichi was born with it.
From a very young age, he was able to see the skeletal structure of a person through his skin. He was also exceptionally talented in swordsmanship. Yoriichi joined the demon slayer corps and taught the sword breathing technique to other demon slayers.
Many of them started awakening. It was the golden age for demon slayers. Yoriichi almost killed Muzan Kibutsuji. His older brother, Michikatsu, was always jealous of his brother’s strength. He allied with Mujan and became a demon.
Idenification
A demon slayer usually has many marks on his body due to the scars he gets from fighting the demons. Tanjiro had a scar on his forehead from a childhood injury.
The Stone Hashira Gyomei has a long scar on his forehead. However, a Demon Slayer Mark is different from these marks. A slayer’s heartbeat should be around 200 beats per minute, and the body temperature should be higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
A person usually dies in such situations. Thus, not many demon slayers have this mark. However, around a person who has the mark, people around him can awaken their mark as a resonance effect. After Tanjiro awakened his mark, the other demon slayers started awakening their marks.
The mark is not permanent and disappears when the slayer is not involved in combat. The mark generally appears as a tattoo on a slayer’s body.
Strengths And Limitation
A demon slayer’s mark is proof of a slayer’s immense ability and strength. Not everyone can acquire it. However, it has its own set of drawbacks. Let’s take a look at its strengths:
Enhanced Physical Abilities:
On awakening the Demon Slayer Mark, a demon slayer’s physical strength and speed get increased by a hundred times. Breathing-style users already have enhanced capabilities.
With the mark, a slayer is able to fight with every cell of his body with maximum efficiency.
Someone like Tanjiro was able to fight at Hashira level with a high-ranking demon when he awakened his mark. The mark unlocks the superhuman capabilities of a demon slayer.
Transparent World:
The transparent world is a high state of awareness in martial arts. In this state, a person has complete control over his senses. A slayer can control his instinct to kill, helping him mask his movements from a demon.
Just like Tanjiro was able to do while fighting Akaza. In a transparent world, one can see beyond the human skin into the skeletal structure of a person.
This helps them predict someone’s attack, giving them an edge in a battle. In the transparent world, a person can perceive the movements of an enemy in slow motion. This makes their attacks more effective and precise.
Bright Red Nichirin Sword:
A slayer who has awakened his mark can turn his Nichirin sword into a bright red colour. This can be done by holding the sword with great force.
A bright red Nichiren sword can pierce through any demon’s body and hamper its regeneration ability. Even high-ranking demons are not able to regenerate when attacked with a bright red Nichirin sword.
However, the mark has one significant drawback. A demon slayer with a mark will not live past twenty-five years of age. But there are exceptions to this rule. Yoriichi lived right up to his old age.
Stone Hashira Gyomei awakened his mark when he was twenty-nine years old. Kokushibo, the upper-moon one, also has the mark of a demon slayer. But this rule does not apply to him, as he is a demon.
